Disability Management Services

Illness and injury can happen to us all – whether at home or at work. When you become sick or injured and are unable to work, you may be eligible to receive benefits to cover your loss of earnings.

The Disability Management Services team at LIUNA Local 183 is available to assist you when you are medically unable to work. Disability Management Services will work with you to determine whether you should be making a claim for Weekly Disability Benefits through the Members’ Benefit Plan, Loss of Earning Benefits offered by the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB), and/or Employment Insurance Benefits. They will help you in completing the necessary paperwork and assist you in the process so you can focus on treatment and recovery. Disability Management Services will work with you in ensuring you obtain appropriate treatment and care while ensuring income replacement benefits are provided during your medically-supported absence from work. Should your absence be long-term, Disability Management Services will assist you in applying for CPP Disability Benefits and/or Long-Term Disability Benefits.

The Disability Management Services team is made up of professionals with medical, claims, and legal backgrounds who will work with you towards a successful return to health. Disability Management Services will protect your privacy and will not share with anyone any details surrounding your confidential medical condition.

Short-Term Disability

If you become disabled while covered because of either an illness or accidental injury that is non-occupation and you cannot perform your job duties, you may be entitled to Weekly Short-Term Disability Benefits. Only Active Members have provisions have provisions for this benefit.

Long-Term Disability

If you remain totally disabled while covered and are under the age of 65, have received the maximum duration of Short-Term Disability Benefits and are unable to return to active full time employment, then you may be eligible for Long-Term Disability Benefits.

Totally Disabled means that solely because of a non-occupational illness or non-occupation accidental bodily injury, you are unable to work and cannot work in any occupation for which you are suited because of education, training, or experience.

Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) (work-related disabilities)

If are injured or become ill because of your job in Ontario, an application must be submitted to the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB). The WSIB is government agency that provides health care services and loss of earnings benefits to those who are injured at work.

All accidents, even without any wage loss, should be reported to the WSIB. It is important that you report the incident immediately to the employer, the WSIB, and obtain medical care. There are strict time limits for obtaining care and filing a claim with the WSIB.
